Stem Cell Treatment for Spinal Cord Injury

Stem Cell Treatment for Spinal Cord Injury

Name: Osama
Diagnosis: Spinal Cord Injury
D.O.B: 01 января 1981
Gender: Male
Country: Libyan Arab Jamahiriya

Treatment: Four neural stem cell injections via lumbar puncture, self cell activation and proliferation program, physical therapy, and TCM

Patient Osama, a 33 year old male patient from Libya, was admitted to Puhua International Hospital for Stem Cell Treatment of his Spinal Cord Injury. He had “Disorders of: activities and sensation of the lower limbs, urination, and defecation for more than one month, post a traffic accident”.

More than one month prior to admission, Osama had an unfortunate car accident, which caused dislocation-fracture of L-1 and led him with an incomplete paraplegia. In Egypt he had received an operation to decompress the injury.

Medical condition before Stem Cell Treatment for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

Prior to his Stem Cell Treatment for his SCI, Osama was normal with his upper body’s movement. The main problem with him is that he could hardly move his legs since his injury. His sensation of pain and temperature were also severely compromised below the level of T-11. He had no sensation when he was urinating or defecating, nor was he able to control these functions.

Stem Cell Treatment for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

Four injections of neural stem cells, self cell activation, proliferation therapy, rehabilitation therapy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Medical condition after Stem Cell Treatment for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

While in hospital, Osama did well with treatments. After his Stem Cell Treatment, Osama had great improvements with his neurological signs and symptoms. After the first round of stem cell injections, he felt his sensation level was lower than before, which meant that he had sensation over more of his body. He had no sensation below the level of T-11 prior to his treatment. But after the stem cell treatment, he had sensation at his pelvic level when he was in a lying position. The second time of Stem Cell Treatment,  sensation with his pelvic region was improved: he felt normal in his pelvic region. And after the third round of SCT, Patient Osama was able to move his toes slightly. This had not been possible before treatment.  He went on to develop some feeling in his toes. Also, he felt that his legs had more strength than before SCT. Before the treatment, his legs always looked pale. Now, vessels could be seen under the skin of his legs, and the tissue looked healthy.

Not only does Osama have improvements with his sensation and his movements of his toes, but also he gained more control over his urination and defecation. Before the therapy, he had no awareness or control over his urination. After the SCT, he had sensation when he urinated, and he could exert about 50% control over it, which had been impossible since the car accident. Also, he could control ~20% of his defecation.

With respect to the great improvements that Osama had experienced, he expressed the desire and intent to stay on the rehabilitation therapy learned in hospital, so as to consolidate the curative effects of his SCT. He hopes that more improvements will be forthcoming.

Follow Up

After the completion of his Stem Cell Treatment, for spinal cord injury (SCI) six months previously, Osama experienced several significant improvements that he felt would have a major impact on the quality of his life.

He regained power in his hip muscles, which brought him greater stability while sitting.

He is now able to raise his knees, stretch his legs, bend his knees by himself, as well as move his feet back towards himself. The neurological level of sensation is lower than before, which allows him able to feel his legs again. It is easier for him to continue to build strength in his leg muscles, which enable him to actually stand for more than ten minutes and move slowly with a walker instead of being confined to a wheel chair.

Patient Osama is continuing on his rehabilitation therapy in Egypt now. All at PIH hope that he will get continued and significant improvements in the future.
