Patient Alghamdi Ahmed Saad, a 59 year-old male, was diagnosed locally as type-2 diabetes some 15 years before the current admission. At that time he presented with symptoms of polydipsia and polyuria. During initial efforts to treat with oral anti-diabetic medication, the patient’s blood sugar level was not effectively controlled, and his other diabetic symptoms worsened progressively. He had been treated with insulin for the ensuing 5 years, though control has been unstable.

Medical condition before Stem Cell Treatment

The patient has a history of poor dietary control of his diabetes. He could sleep, but was also troubled with frequent urination. According to the patient’s blood sugar record, the readings were around 10mmol/l in the morning on an empty stomach and around 12mmol/L before meals. Unfortunately, his blood sugar was very labile, and fluctuated widely, sometimes even shooting up over 28mmol/l.

Further, the Glargine (Lantus) insulin dosage was reduced from 20u to 18u per day. Since then, the patient’s blood sugar has been maintained at a fairly normal level (with the help of a much reduced medical regimen).It is possible that he even be able may stop using Glimepiride completely in the near future according to his physician, as well as continuing to lower his insulin dosage over the follow-up visits.
